One of the first technical decisions in a website project is whether the site should be static or dynamic. The words sound technical, but the choice comes down to a simple question: how often will your content change, and who will change it?
What is a static website?
A static website is a set of finished pages. When someone visits, the server simply sends the page; there is no database to query and nothing to assemble. That makes static sites very fast, very secure and cheap to host.
The trade-off is editing. Changing text or images normally means editing the files, so updates usually go through your developer.
What is a dynamic website?
A dynamic website builds pages from content stored in a database. You log in to an admin panel, add a blog post, a product or a job opening, and the site publishes it using the right layout. Content management systems such as WordPress, and frameworks such as Laravel, work this way.
Side by side
- Speed: static is fastest out of the box; dynamic sites can be fast with caching and good hosting.
- Security: static has very little to attack; dynamic sites need regular updates.
- Editing: static changes go through a developer; dynamic sites give you an editor.
- Running costs: static is cheapest to host and maintain; dynamic needs maintenance.
- Features: dynamic sites handle blogs, catalogues, search, logins and forms with logic more easily.
Choose static if…
- Your content changes a few times a year
- You need a clean company profile, portfolio or landing page
- Speed, security and low running cost matter most
Choose dynamic if…
- You publish news, offers, jobs or articles regularly
- You have a catalogue of products, properties or courses
- Several people need to update the site
- You plan to add features such as bookings or member areas
Our usual recommendation
For a small business that mostly needs to look professional and get enquiries, a static website is often the smartest start. For businesses that live on fresh content, a dynamic website pays for itself quickly because your team can keep it current without waiting on anyone.
