If you're starting an online store, Shopify and WooCommerce are probably on your shortlist. Both are excellent, both accept Indian payments, and both can grow with you. They simply take different approaches, and one will suit your business better than the other.
The short version
Shopify is a hosted platform: you pay a monthly plan and Shopify looks after hosting, security and the checkout. WooCommerce is a free plugin for WordPress: you own and host the whole site, which gives you more freedom and more responsibility.
When Shopify is the better fit
- You want to launch quickly with minimal technical upkeep
- You'd rather not think about hosting, updates or security patches
- You plan to sell across Instagram, Facebook and Google from one dashboard
- Your products and pricing are fairly standard
When WooCommerce is the better fit
- Content matters to your marketing: blogs, guides and landing pages
- You want full ownership of your site and data, with no platform lock-in
- You need unusual features, such as custom pricing rules, bookings or wholesale
- You already have a WordPress website you want to add a store to
Costs to compare
With Shopify, budget for the monthly plan, any paid apps and possibly transaction fees, depending on your payment setup. With WooCommerce, budget for good hosting, premium extensions where needed and regular maintenance. Over a few years the totals are often closer than people expect, so compare the running costs, not only the build.
And when neither fits
Some businesses outgrow both, for example marketplaces with many sellers, B2B portals with customer-specific prices, or stores tightly linked to an ERP. That is when a custom e-commerce build becomes worth it.
We build on both platforms, so we have no reason to push one. If you're unsure, our e-commerce team can recommend the right fit for your products and plans.
